See Southern Africa’s most beautiful destinations on a railway getaway
Africa is home to beautiful places, amazing animals and sweeping landscapes, and Southern Africa is no exception. Game reserves, monuments and places of interest can be found across the region. You can see all of this on a train journey – from the comfortable train and on off-train excursions. These journeys will take you to South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
South Africa is home to diverse cultures and breath-taking landscapes, as well as the wild animals of Africa. A railway holiday will take you to the country’s best destinations, including Cape Town, Soweto, Kimberley and Durban. You’ll travel along popular routes including the Garden Route and the Cape Winelands. Exploring these routes, you’ll see natural landmarks such as Table Mountain and the Drakensberg Mountain Range. You can see South Africa’s wildlife as well as the Big 5 at the Kruger National Park.
Namibia is a sight to behold from the window of a train. The country is home to scenes of white clay pans and dead camel thorn trees, as well as sand dunes and arid vistas. The Fish River Canyon, Namib Desert, Keetmanshoop, Sossusvlei and Lüderitz are among the country’s most popular destinations and natural landmarks. A railway getaway in Namibia will also take you to Etosha National Park, where four of the Big 5 can be seen on a game drive.
You’ll see the Udzungwa Mountains as well as the Great Rift Valley on a train journey in Tanzania. The latter is a geological masterpiece made up of lakes, volcanoes and smaller rift valleys. One of the country’s greatest attractions is the Selous Game Reserve. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the largest animal reserves in the world. You can see elephants, hippos, giraffes and lions, as well as leopards and cheetahs on a game drive through the reserve. The game reserve’s plains of Acacia trees, wild savannah, swamps and wetlands serve as a beautiful backdrop for photographs.
Zimbabwe is the jewel in Southern Africa’s crown. The country is a popular safari destination, known for its game parks and wildlife. It is the home of the Victoria Falls – a waterfall on the Zambezi River. You’ll see places of historical importance, including the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, on a train getaway. Hwange National Park – the second largest nature park in Zimbabwe – is one of the safari destinations the trains visit. The park is home to the Big 5 as well as other animals. You can see and experience the country’s natural beauty at Matobo National Park and Antelope Park.
