Southern Cross Southbound
This impressive 12-day journey between Victoria Falls and Pretoria stops at carefully selected locations in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and South Africa. Starting in the Victoria Falls, guests enjoy a walking tour of the village and the falls, departing in the afternoon for Hwange. After game-viewing activities, guests continue to Matobas National Park, site of Cecil John Rhodes’ grave, Antelope Park and the Great Zimbabwe Ruins. The train then traverses Zimbabwe as guests enjoy a day at leisure on board. Day seven includes a game drive at the famous wildlife reserve of Kapama before guests continue on to explore the Kingdom of Swaziland. This magnificent sojourn spends the last few days taking guests through the Drakensberg Mountains to the Kruger Park for game viewing and the historical areas of Pilgrim’s Rest, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and God’s Window. The final day has the train pulling into Rovos Rail Station where guests continue on a tour of Pretoria or Johannesburg and Soweto.
Day 1 to Day 6
DAY 1 – VICTORIA FALLS TOUR
08h30 Check out of hotel. Luggage collected by Shongololo staff.
09h00 Walking tour of the village and Victoria Falls.
16h30 Reception at the Victoria Falls Hotel.
17h00 Southern Cross Southbound Train departs for Thompson’s Junction.
DAY 2 – HWANGE RESERVE GAME DRIVE
06h30 Game drive in Hwange Game Reserve.
18h00 Southern Cross Southbound Depart for Bulawayo.
DAY 3 – MATOBAS NATIONAL PARK VISIT
09h00 Full-day tour of Matobas National Park. Visit the grave of Cecil John Rhodes as well as bushmen caves.
18h00 Southern Cross Southbound Depart Bulawayo for Somabhula.
DAY 4 – ANTELOPE PARK VISIT
09h00 Full day at Antelope Park.
Optional extras include canoeing, game drive, horseback game viewing, elephant-back riding, bird-watching cruise, walk with lions.
17h30 Return to the Southern Cross Southbound train and depart for Bannockburn.
DAY 5 – GREAT ZIMBABWE RUINS VISIT
09h00 Board vehicles and drive to the Great Zimbabwe Ruins.
17h00 Rejoin Southern Cross Southbound train in Rutenga.
DAY 6 – DAY ON BOARD EN ROUTE TO SOUTH AFRICA
Day on board the Southern Cross Southbound train travelling to Klaserie in South Africa. Clear customs and immigration at Beitbridge.
Day 7 to Day 12
DAY 7 – KAPAMA GAME DRIVE AND WILD DOG & CHEETAH PROJECT
07h00 Morning game drive in Kapama Game Reserve followed by visit to the Wild Dog and Cheetah Project.
13h00 Return to the train for lunch. Depart for Kaapmuiden.
DAY 8 – KINGDOM OF SWAZILAND TOUR
08h30 Depart in vehicles from Mpaka. Visit Ngwenya Glass, Mbabane and Manzini.
18h45 After border formalities at Mpaka, depart for Maputo in Mozambique.
DAY 9 – CITY TOUR OF MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE
09h00 City tour of Maputo, Mozambique.
15h30 Return to the train for afternoon tea.
18h00 After border formalities the train heads for Malelane in South Africa.
DAY 10 – KRUGER PARK GAME DRIVE
08h00 Full-day game drive in the Kruger Park (open-air vehicles optional).
18h00 Return to the train in Malelane and depart for Nelspruit.
DAY 11 – PANORAMA ROUTE
09h00 Full-day panorama tour of Pilgrim’s Rest, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, God’s Window.
17h00 Rejoin train in Nelspruit and depart for Witbank.
DAY 12 – PRETORIA / JOHANNESBURG AND SOWETO TOURS
09h00 Arrive at Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria. Tour of Pretoria or Johannesburg and Soweto.
17h00 Transfer to hotel. Tour ends.
